Every year, San Diego is taken over by thousands of people with one goal in mind – Comic-Con. What was once a place for fans to buy, sell, and trade comics, has since become one of the largest events in the country. Just this past week, over 130,000 people flooded San Diego in hopes of catching a glimpse of their favorite movie stars, exclusive trailers, and unbelievable panels. With fans waiting up to twelve hours outside the sacred Hall H, studios have an enormous amount of pressure not to disappoint their endearing fans.
While studios usually come loaded with surprises and special guests, not every fan can attend Comic-Con and therefore miss out on the latest news. Luckily, the list below contains the top announcements and panels made at 2016 San Diego Comic-Con.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
It’s been five years since the final installment of Harry Potter was released, yet Harry Potter is on the verge of another blockbuster hit. With Harry Potter and the Cursed Child stage play becoming a huge success, fans are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the script on July 31. If that wasn’t enough, Warner Bros. released a new trailer for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them that had fans cheering. To top it all off, Eddie Redmayne, who plays Newt Scamander in the newest film, helped hand out free wands to everyone that attended the panel.
Fans of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods have waited patiently for a studio to pick up the dark fantasy novel that toys with the idea that gods are real and live among us. Not only was the cast there to promote the new show produced by Starz, but a trailer was released, giving fans their first look at the world of American Gods. Showrunner, Bryan Fuller, also thrilled attendees by revealing that Kristin Chenoweth will be playing the part of Goddess Easter.
It’s no shock that Comic-Con is ruled by DC and Marvel. Each year, the studios battle against one another to see who can outshine the other. This year, the winner appears to be Marvel. Although filming for Spider-Man: Homecoming started a little over a month ago, the studio played some exclusive footage from the upcoming film. The clip not only showed an average day in the life of Peter Parker (Tom Holland) but also gave viewers their first glimpse of The Vulture, played by Michael Keaton.
Kong: Skull Island
Universal thrilled viewers with the first trailer for their reboot of King Kong. Featuring Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, and John Goodman, Kong: Skull Island is the first film that sets up the Kong/Godzilla universe. The trailer not only showcased the variety of talent Universal has procured, but it also gave a glimpse of Kong himself. Appearing to be the largest Kong yet, the film is set to open on March 10, 2017, with Godzilla 2 being released in 2019. Universal is planning on Kong and Godzilla finally facing off in May of 2020.
Since Marvel released the first Iron Man, audiences have wondered when they would take on the mind-bending character of Dr. Strange. Although a teaser was already released, a new trailer and Comic-Con exclusive clip was unveiled. From the trailer alone, it appears Marvel is breaking away from their usual style and trying something different. With Benedict Cumberbatch taking on the role, Dr. Strange is sure to be a must-see.
Warner Bros. and DC started their Saturday morning panel off with a bang. As over 6,000 people packed into the hall, everyone was wondering if they would catch a glimpse of the Justice League. While the panel wasn’t as impressive as Marvel’s, both DC and Warner Bros. didn’t disappoint as they released over two minutes of Justice League footage. Though the trailer showed the entire team, Ezra Miller’s portrayal of the Flash stole the show and definitely had people talking.
Probably one of the most anticipated panels at Comic-Con this year was for Wonder Woman. After Wonder Woman’s first appearance in Batman vs. Superman, fans were praising Gal Gadot’s performance and begged for more. Being the first female superhero to get her own standalone film, Warner Bros./DC knew they had to do something spectacular. With anticipation at a fever pitch, the lights dimmed and the first trailer for Wonder Woman was shown. As the final frame faded to black, fans jumped to their feet, wiped tears from their eyes, and clapped as the trailer was everything they expected and much more.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2
If there is one thing that Marvel knows how to do, it’s Comic-Con. The Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 panel was so massive that even Hall H could barely contain it. Not only was there exclusive clips and a secret trailer that isn’t even online yet, but Marvel shocked fans with several surprises like SPOILER ALERT!!! Captain Marvel will be played by Brie Larson, and Kurt Russell will be taking on the role of Ego, the living planet. As for the panel itself, Yondu (Michael Rooker) and his gang of bandits stole the show as they harassed the entire cast throughout their interviews, making it one of the best presentations at Comic-Con this year.
